Have you ever wondered how ‘permanent’ permanent makeup is? There is a lot of misinformation out there, so I want to do my best to sort it out for you. By law, in the state of Oklahoma, cosmetic tattooing, also known as medical micropigmentation, is always prefaced as permanent. Now, how permanent is ‘permanent’? While no well trained medical micropigmentologist will tell you it’s temporary (in many states it is referred to as semi-permanent), without follow up and proper aftercare, it likely will not last forever and ever or maintain it’s original color intensity and integrity. Without proper aftercare, PMU will fade over time to different degrees. This is due to the depth we place pigments and cellular turnover rate, along with many other factors- lifestyle, sun exposure, cosmetic products used, etc. As a med mic professional, I will recommend after care specifically for you to keep your permanent cosmetics looking it’s very best, and that will also include color boost and touch up appointments. After your initial investment these follow up appointments, when made as recommended, are discounted as a courtesy to my clients. I want you to be able to maintain your permanent cosmetics and enjoy them for as long as you like.
When is it time for a permanent makeup color boost? The answer is different for every client. Average time after your initial procedure appointments to return is 18 months-3 years. Some may need to come in sooner, and some may be able to go longer. Below are some helpful guidelines, but if you’re not sure, shoot me a message and I can assess for you.
•Your body chemistry, physical health, skin condition and lifestyle choices play a major role in the longevity of your permanent makeup.
•Brows and lips generally fade slowly and evenly when cared for properly. When they are no longer as dark and defined as you like or you find yourself reaching for cosmetics to fill them in, it’s time for a color boost.
•Eyeliner, over time, can lighten or shift to reveal blue undertones. Both can be taken care of with an eyeliner color boost.
• No guarantee is made to the longevity or outcome of permanent cosmetics.
I get asked often- ‘does it hurt?’ Or, ‘I've had permanent makeup before and it was soooo painful!!!’ This makes me cringe because permanent makeup should NEVER be that unbearable or extremely painful. While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, I use various topical numbing creams to keep you relaxed and honestly, nearly pain free. The feed back I get the most is that the vibrations from the machine feel funny, but have yet to have anyone tell me that the procedure is unbearable. Throughout the procedure, I ask my clients how they are feeling and how tolerable everything is. I watch my clients body language to gauge how relaxed they are, and adjust if needed to get them more comfortable. My goal will always be that clients have an amazing experience at Micro Ink & Artistry .
Ever had a surgery? Or even just an injury that required medical attention? What comes along with healing these types of things…after care instructions! These instructions are given so that you have optimal recovery. The same goes for permanent cosmetics- in order for you to heal correctly and have maximum color retention (aka best return on your investment) I will give you after care instructions to follow specific to your procedure. Are they hard to follow? Absolutely not. Aftercare will require you to cleanse and apply aftercare products in a specific way, keep the area as dry as possible (no swimming, saunas, etc) and absolutely no sweating for about 7-10 days. I provide the products you will use with detailed instructions, so you don't have to worry about purchasing anything additional.
